CompareArtist Statement/Bio
In my current journey as an artist, I utilize colour as the signifier to capture and convey the raw, vulnerable experiences I have grappled with – namely, depression, anxiety, and ADHD. This pivotal transformation in my artistic approach unfolded during my first year of pursuing a master’s degree, prompting me to withdraw my direct hand from the artwork’s creation. Instead, I embraced the concept of rendering each canvas as a single, unbroken expanse of colour.
Through this deliberate choice, colour emerged as the conduit for my memories, emotions, objects, and sensations intertwined with my mental health. My creative process became a means of externalizing my current struggles onto the canvas, effectively constructing a tangible archive. This archive serves as both a cathartic release and a method of unburdening myself from the weight I carry. The paintings displayed within this exhibition are based on a childhood object, where I incorporated the use of cheesecloth to allow the painting to become part of the object, thus allowing it to be displayed as a painting or a sculpture.
I hold a BA in Honours Art History and Studio Art (2021) from the University of Guelph, and currently an MFA candidate (2023) at Western University, where I just concluded my thesis exhibition Achy Awfulness.Â
