Artist Bio/Statement

Laurie Buhr is a native of Kitchener, Ontario. As a child of the 70s she was influenced by Disney and Looney Tunes animation, bold coloured clothing and large patterned wallpaper. Family photographs capture a young creative making art with crayons, pencils and markers.

Laurie attended the U of W Fine Arts Studio Program where she enjoyed painting, drawing, printmaking and art history. She was seduced by the French Impressionists, Van Gogh, The Group of Seven and Tom Thomson which led to the use of high chroma colours in her work.

Upon leaving school to pursue marriage and raising a family, Laurie began work as a professional gardener and garden designer using her knowledge of colour to create numerous private gardens over the last 18 years.

During the fall of 2020,Laurie made the decision to set up a home studio and revive her love of painting and drawing. Participating in the annual Inktober drawing challenge with pen and ink really helped to resurrect her illustrative style. Her art reflects her love for outdoor spaces and all the creatures who reside in them. Through observation and exploration of the natural world she captures the quiet secretive moments in her work.

In this series of pen and ink mixed media drawings, I’ve delved into the life stages of sunflowers, inspired by Van Gogh’s and Egon Schiele’s sunflower paintings and Imao Keinen Kacho’s Japanese woodcuts.

“Radiance” captures the moment a sunflower’s petals unfurl, bursting with light. I’ve used vivid colours and line to convey the energy of beginnings.
“Reverie” shifts the focus to the later stages of a sunflower’s life, as its outer petals fade and it focuses on seed production. My aim was to convey the quiet reflective beauty of this cycle using complex lines to show the curling petal shapes draping over the fading seed head.

These two drawings serve as a meditation on the universal theme of life’s cycles-birth, growth, decline and renewal which is mirrored in the life of a sunflower. The post-impressionist touch adds depth and emotion to these natural transitions.

As the artists before me found the beauty in observing sunflowers in various stages in their landscapes, I invite you to reflect on the meaning of these natural rhythms of life captured in these drawings “Radiance and Reverie”.
